Beneficiaries of Youth in afforestation Program in the Eastern Region have given government a week ultimatum to pay their five months outstanding allowance arrears to avert a massive demonstration and subsequently  regional Sit-down strike.
 
“we are asking that all our unpaid arrears from July to September with some outstanding payments for May and June be cleared “.
 
The aggrieved  beneficiaries added that ” If the above request fails,we are going to embark on a peaceful demonstration to demand what rightly is due us.After the demonstration,If no responses are given we will embark on a regional sit-down strike of which we will make the offices of Forestry Commission across all districts our places of worn until our allowances are paid”.
 
Addressing the media in Koforidua on  ,the leader of the aggrieved beneficiaries Regina Aku Dzamashie explained that their colleagues in other regions have received their July allowances as promised by the CEO of Forestry Commission,Kwadwo Owusu Afriyies but non of them  in the Eastern region has been paid.
The beneficiaries say they risk their lives battling reptiles in executing their duties without protective gadgets hence most of them have either been injured,bitten by organism or chased by snakes.
 
“most beneficiaries have not received their working tools to work.These include boots,cutlasses,raincoat,safety boots,among others.The absence of these make work very difficult.We have countless number of cutlass wounds and other encounter with snakes and scorpions”
However,according to the beneficiaries because their allowances have not been paid,they find it difficult to seek proper healthcare.
 
Public Relations Officer of the aggrieved beneficiaries,Israel, told the media, the Youth in Afforestation job is high risk hence deserve better allowances therefore they disapprove government decision  slashing their allowance from contrary to what has been stated in their appointment letters
