The Koforidua Circuit Court “B” has remanded into Prison custody Four (4) illegal miners arrested in the Atewa Forest Reserve.
 
The four accused persons are ,Richard Danpah ,25, Kofi Asomaning ,38,Logo Kwabena ,29, and a 17-year-old student Oscar Dartey ,17.
 
They pleaded not guilty to  charges of  conspiracy to commit crime and mining without license .The Presiding Judge Her Honour Mercy Adei Kotei remanded the accused persons  into prison custody to reappear in Court on March 8,2018.
 
 Forest guards led by the Assistant Manager in Charge of Anyinam Range of the Atewa Forest  ,Palmer Aikens ,arrested the accused persons Tuesday dawn mining among a group of illegal miners who were busily mining in the deep forest of the Akyem Bomaa Portion of the Atewa Forest reserve but the others managed to escape.
 
The operation team also retrieved  2 mining buckets , 2 headpans,1 washing carpets ,shovels ,1 pick axe,gold dust,  rice, tomatoes ,onion ,cooking utensil,3 pumping machines .
 
The team set ablaze tents erected by the Miners which served as temporal shelter.
Following the ban on illegal mining in Ghana,the miners have diverted their operations into the Atewa Forest reserve as well as the Nyafoman forest to avoid being arrested though many have been arrested  and prosecuted.
The activities of the illegal miners in the Atewa forest reserve continue to deplete the vegetation and pollute the headwaters of  Birim ,Densu and Ayensu rivers .
