The Forestry Commission of Ghana is appealing to the new Chief Justice to ensure that courts deal with illegal logging cases incisively with severe punishment to deter others.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Commission,Mr.Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie  explained that ,illegal logging is a bane to Forest sustainability due it the high rate of destruction to forest reserves and ecosystem therefore the commission wants the Chief Justice ,Sophia Akufo to include illegal logging to the mandate of Courts designated to expedite action on illegal mining menace .

Latest figure from the Environmental Protection Agency indicates that ,the rate of Ghana’s deforestation stands at about 22, 000 hectares per annum ,one of the highest in Africa and the world .

To  salvage the dire situation, 16 per cent of Ghana’s land area has been set aside to conserve the representative samples of natural ecosystems in the form of forest reserves, national parks and wildlife reserves.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative ,anti-graft body in Ghana report in 2016 fingered combine effect of corruption involving some Forestry Commission officials for the high rate of illegal lumbering  in Ghana as they abet with the eco-crime .

The  Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee responsible for the Environment,Mr Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko has warned , if Ghanaians did not stop the wanton destruction of their forest resources, curing of diseases may face challenges since all medicinal plants may  extinct .

A Rocha Ghana,an environmental base organization has also warned that, several river bodies in Ghana with diminish if the rate of destruction of forest reserves in Ghana is not reversed .
