Kessington Salt Factory,an Indian salt mining company in Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region of Ghana has been attacked by some irate youth of Adina,a fishing community for allegedly Polluting a river which is their source of drinking water.
The angry youth , mostly local salt miners allegedly went on rampage and beleaguered the factory on Wednesday ,hurled stones on staff including their Indian expatriate bosses.The youth also burnt tyres to demonstrate their anger against the factory.A number of workers with the Company suffered various degrees of injuries.The rampaging youth allegedly vandalized and looted some properties of the company during the riot.
According to Sources,Police from Keta Divisional Police Command rushed to the scene after receiving distress calls over the incident however had a tough time bringing the chaotic situation under control as the Police were also attacked with stones and other implements .Police Reinforcement team dispatched to scene helped to put the situation under control.However,no arrest have been made.
The Indian Company has temporarily suspended operation.
The India Company has refuted claims of water pollution by the locals adding that,salt mining is done in the Keta Lagoon.
In December 2015, the local salt miners at Adina in a similar fashion clashed with workers of Kessington salt factory which led to the injury of seven persons including three Police Officers.Fourteen people were arrested during the riot.
