Much was not known about Puffer Fish in Ghana until recently when the poisonous fish  killed at least 8 consumers in parts of Eastern and Volta Regions.

Biologists say Puffer fish also known as blowfish has more than 120 different species worldwide.

Most Puffer fishes could be found in tropical and subtropical ocean waters, but some species live in brackish and even fresh water.

Puffer fish have long, tapered bodies with bulbous heads. Some wear wild markings and colors to advertise their toxicity, while others have more muted or cryptic coloring to blend in with their environment.

Almost all pufferfish contain neurotoxin substance call tetrodotoxin, which according to biologists ,is deadly up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide.

The poisonous substance in Puffer fish can kill 30 adult humans.The most scary aspect is that,there  is no known antidote to remedy the poison of puffer fish.

Despite the high level of toxic present in Puffer  fish,it is considered a delicacy .In Japan the delicacy is Called fugu , it is extremely expensive with a single fish sold for $100  but only trained, licensed chefs are allowed to prepare and sell Puffer fish. Yet Japan continue to record fatalities among consumers.

Some fishermen in Akateng in the Upper Manya Krobo District shared their knowledge about how well they know about puffer fish.According to them ,Puffer fish a sweet delicacy but poisonous  therefore prepared with caution before eaten .

“that fish is poisonous so we when we catch it,we know how to prepare it before we eat” -Samuel tetteh,a fisherman said.

Following the death of  two persons at Affram Plains Area,officials of NADMO and the Assembly organized a swoop and retrieved some 21 puffer fish being smuggled by some market  women

Kafui and Selasi, both fish sellers  at Tease in Affram Plains South District are cognizant of the toxic nature of puffer which they say have killed some of their family members.

The Food and Drugs Authority however has arduous task to ensure that,puffer fish do not get onto meals in homes.
