The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei Owusu, is suggesting that ,Operation Vanguard Task force deployed to mining regions of Ghana to clamp down on illegal miners must begin to deal ruthless towards recalcitrant illegal miners still operating despite ban on their activities .
According to Joe Osei Owusu ,the task force must gun down persons found engaging in illegal mining to deter others.Speaking exclusively to Starr News’ Parliamentary Correspondent, Ibrahim Alhassan, Hon. Osei Owusu prescribed that the only viable way to clamp down on the menace is to be ruthless.
“The other time I said we should shoot people and people were not happy with that. [But] I still think that’s the way to deal with recalcitrant people is not to use the regular law system,” he proposed.
Illegal mining has over a decade now, led to destruction of estimated 10 % of arable farmlands in the country, polluted major river bodies and depleted forest reserves.
The menace reached alarming threshold attracting the media to focus attention to the sector which compelled government to place a ban on illegal gold mining and subsequently deployed joint Security Task force to clamp down on defiant miners.
The task force has arrested about 1000 illegal miners as at January 2018 however less than 15% have been jailed even with that, most of the sentences not deterrent enough .
