 The Eastern Regional Manager of  Forestry Commission ,Yaw Atuahene Nyako, says the commission has increased its informant network  to get timely and accurate information about the operations of illegal miners who sneak into the forest reserves in the region particularly the Atewa Forest.
It follows continue invasion of the Atewa forest reserve by illegal  miners to mine in deep forest.
Many illegal miners have been arrested and jailed by the Koforidua circuit Court B while large number are still standing trial. 
The latest conviction occurred Friday when a 47 year old illegal miner, leader of a group of illegal miners was jailed three and half years in hard labour and additionally, fined Ghc26,400 by Presiding Judge Her Honour Mercy Adei -Kotei. 

But the Regional Manager  of the Forestry  commission says due to the inadequate forest guards, strong collaboration is needed with the communities to help curb the menace.
