The leading telecommunication company in Ghana,MTN ,has announced plans to switch to the use of Solar energy to gradually power its cell sites in the Country.
The move apart from reducing dependency on national grid and reduce utility expenditure ,is also in line with global drive towards renewable energy exploration .
A publication by the Herald Newspaper, March 20,2015 during the peak of debilitating power crises in Ghana , cited the Managing Director (MD) of the largest telecommunication giant MTN Ghana, Serame Taukobong, who expressed disquiet about high cost of doing business in the country revealing that the industry’s market leader, spends a total of GH¢2 Million monthly, to power it set-ups across the country.
The huge amount is spent on fuel to power their generating sets and according to the Corporate Services Executive, Cynthia Lumor, who chipped in, in the course of the MD’s presentation said, a chunk of the amount is not budgeted for, thereby, sending it budget out of gear.
Speaking to the Media in Koforidua ,the Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Cynthia Lumor explained , the renewable energy mix would help the company to serve customers well even in the midst of power challenges .
