The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor  has suggested to government to establish Environmental Police Unit under the Ghana Police Service to keep guard over the environment from destruction .

The Lawmaker believes ,the establishment of this special Police Unit would help the country to conserve and Preserve the environment from pollution especially by illegal miners, illegal chainsaw operators and other perpetrators of environmental crime.
The Ghanaian Lawmaker said this Wednesday when contributing on Ghone TV’s morning flagship program , ‘GH Today’ on illegal mining menace in the country.
The MP,disgusted by the level of destruction of arable lands and water bodies by illegal miners ,stated that, the menace must be stopped in the earnest by hook or crook and afterwards , environmental Police be established to police the environment to ensure that the environment is protected for a sustainable development .
Several Countries globally have Environmental Police unit combating  varied environmental crimes  .The latest country to establish Environmental Police is China.
Illegal mining activities in Ghana have led to destruction of arable lands and pollution of water bodies with poisonous chemicals mostly mercury and Cyanide .  Ghana is battling illegal mining for about a  decade .The level of pollution has reached lethal level attracting glowing concern by Ghanaians and the media.
Experts have predicted that,Ghana may import water after 2020 should the current situation continue unabated .
The Government of Ghana has however ,promised to deal with the menace once for all with comprehensive policy approach in the coming days to preserve and conserve the environment from further destruction.
