The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested four more Chinese nationals engaged in illegal gold mining .The arrest of the four brings the total number of Chinese busted in the region within a week ,to eight (8) in addition to two Ghanaian accomplices .
The latest arrest was made by the Nkawkaw Divisional Police Command . The suspects reportedly escaped arrest during the initial raid at Denkyira near Nkawkaw in the Eastern region of Ghana.
The first batch of suspects were arrested during a special operation carried out by the Rapid Deployment Unit of the regional Police Command led by Superintendent Richardson Kumeko,the outgoing New Juaben Municipal Police Commander ,on Thursday.
The suspects were brought to the Eastern regional Police Headquarters where their caution statement were taken and charged with three counts of offense including mining without license , possessing explosive arms without authorization and conspiracy to commit crime .
The suspects have since been remanded by court to reappear on April 12,2017 to allow police conduct further investigations .
Police retrieved four excavators ,two pump action guns,68 cartridges and three pumping machines from the crime scene.
Already ,29 foreigners including 25 Nigeriens , Togolese,Malian,Guinea Conakry, and Burkinabe arrested by the forestry commission for illegally mining gold in the Atewa Forest reserve in January 26,2017 are currently facing trial at the Koforidua Circuit Court .
According to the PRO of the Eastern regional Police Command, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the operation is in furtherance to the three week ultimatum issued by Government to the illegal miners to terminate their operation .
According to ASP Ebenezer Tetteh,the Police Commander is communicating with the Chinese Embassy and the Immigration service for possible deportation of the Chinese suspects.
Ghana has been battling with destructive activities of illegal gold mining known locally as galamsey for more a decade.The anthropogenic activity has led to pollution of major river bodies ,degradation of arable lands,and destruction of farms.
The canker has reached a lethal level which has become national concern.The Government has promised to deal with the menace with comprehensive approach contained in a policy document which is to be outdoored soon.
Due to the Involvement of some influential persons including Chiefs and politicians in the illegal activities,previous government failed to deal with it ,however,the New president of Ghana,Nana Akufo Addo says ,his government has the political will the bite the bullet in dealing with the menace .
Currently,civil society groups and the media have intensified campaign mounting pressure on government to flush out all illegal miners in the country to resolve the canker in the earnest.
