Five Chinese Nationals have been arrested by joint team of Security personnel for illegally mining directly in river Ankobrah,a major river in Western part of Ghana.
The Chinese were arrested together with four other Ghanaian accomplices .
The suspects were arrested red handed dredging the river bed with 34 sophisticate dredging equipments in prospect for gold.
The suspects sleep in the Heavy Equipment on river ,urinate and defecate into the river in addition to the varied pollutants including mercury released into the river.
The caution statements of the suspects are being taken for prosecution .
Ghana’s environment is seriously being degraded while water bodies polluted with impunity creating water stress situation in many communities as a result of illegal mining activities .
The Ghana water company limited ,is occasionally, compelled to shut down water treatment plants due to untreatable turbidity levels.
Several experts have warned,Ghana may import water by 2030 should the current rate of destruction and pollution of water bodies remain unresolved .
Various governments paid lips services to fight the canker which never materialized due to powerful personalities behind the illegal activities. However, the current government has assured the nation ,it is committed to fighting the menace despite the anticipated antagonism .
Many foreign nationals including Chinese ,Nigeriens,Malians,Togolese ,Guineans among others have taken advantage of the loopholes in law enforcement of the country, sneak into bushes with their equipments to partner the locals to illegally mine mostly in rivers .
Most Chinese nationals have been deported after their arrest .
